Treatment of Laser Photocoagulation in diffuse diabetic Macular Edema

Abstract
In a prospective study, 47 patients with documented macular edema of various causes were entered into a therapeutic trial of Laser Photocoagulation. Among the patients, diabetic macular edema was prominent and diabetic macular edema was the most frequent cause of visual loss with diabetic retinopathy.
So, the author reviewed clinical analysis of 24 patients, 38 eyes, with diffuse diabetic macular edema which were treated either by focal laser photocoagulation or grid-pattern photocoagulation between January 1989 to March 1991 and followed for at least 6 months at Chosun university hospital.
The results were as follows
1. There was improvement of macular edema in 18 eyes (47.4%), no changes in 12 eyes (31.6%), and increased macular edema was 8 eyes (21%).
2. There was improvement of visual acuity in 14 eyes (38%), no changes in 19 eyes (47%), and decreased visual acuity was 5 eyes (15%).
3. The presence of exudation, hypertension and combined case were poorer prognostic factor in outcome of visual acuity at laser treatment, especially.
